Planning a steam room in your bathroom

A steam room works at a low temperature (40–50 °C) and a humidity of almost 100 %. That is why it often fits in an existing bathroom — provided the space is ready for it.

The space

Everything must be watertight: walls and ceiling tiled or clad, a slightly sloping ceiling so that condensation does not drip, a drain in the floor and a door that closes properly. Allow 2 to 3 m² for two to three people.

The generator

A steam generator of 4 to 9 kW is enough for most domestic steam rooms. It sits within a few metres of the room, with a water connection, a drain and its own electrical circuit.

Finish

Natural stone such as basalt or slate holds heat and feels calm; mosaic and large-format ceramic tiles are lighter and easier to maintain. A heated bench and recessed lighting make the difference between a shower and a ritual.
